Boise, Idaho....birds and prisoners!

Woke to the first clear, blue sky we have since since last Monday and we loved it. Now, I know our friends and family have been enjoying an Indian Summer of 80's in Minneapolis but we were thrilled to get up to 60 today here in Idaho! We did chores first this morning which meant the BB got an oil change and check-up (which he passed) and Jeff and I, while waiting, walked over to Walmart. Mostly for another bag of Honeycrisp apples which we are going through like water. A women at Walmart approached us as we were filling a bag and had the audacity to ask if Honeycrisp apples were "any good". Hells yeah!
After chores were done, we went to the World Center for Birds of Prey, just outside of Boise. Wonderful facility that "specializes" in Peregrine Falcons and California Condor rehabilitation and release. They had quite a few birds on exhibit, one of which was our fav, the Bald Eagle. He was quite vocal and we got a real flashback after having watching the Decorah Eagle Cam all spring!
I think he was telling us to stop taking pictures! Anyway, it was a really interesting tour and we passed an hour or so taking photos and watching a condor devour a rabbit (or something furry).

Next we headed downtown where every Saturday, April-December, they have a "street fair". Boise has a really lovely downtown, easy parking, wide streets, neat old buildings and beautiful view of the mountains. We had a GRRRRRReat lunch at a pub and our waitress was married to a Wisconsin native and fellow Packer fan (so she got a grrrreat tip!).

After gorging ourselves (and this after a conversation about the perils of this "vacation" life and weight gain), we headed to the Idaho State Penitentiary. This particular prison opened in the late 1800's and closed in the 70's. It obviously has a very interesting history including carrying out death penalties by hanging, the last being in the 50's when a henious criminal killed a woman over a cab fare and then ate part of her. It also housed an 11 year old boy who killed his mother because she asked him to do the wash and, the first female serial killer. We had a great tour guide and though she claims to have never noticed any paranormal activity, the prison was featured on one of those "ghost hunter" type shows a few years back.

We returned to the BP for dinner and pow-wow about our next destination. Jeff is quick-draw when it comes to looking up destination weather predictions. It seems tommorrow is going to be another nice day and then rain sets in Monday-Wednesday. So while we planned to drive to Bend, Oregon tommorrow, it seems foolish to spend another 7 hours in the truck on what may be the best day of the week. So, I think we will stay here one more night and spend our day of sun in the mountains, hopefully we can find a good hike. Head to Bend on Monday (in the rain) and hope we can squeeze out at least one good day there to see the Cascades. That's the plan for now anyway...
